OK, the book set a one day record for the most books sold on release day. Kudos to Dan Brown.
Here's my take.
The Da Vinci Code was fun to read 'cuz you could work the puzzles as you read. And was rather controversial. In my humble opinion it wouldn't have sold nearly as many copies if the church folk wouldn't have made such a stink about the contents and ideas set in the novel. It's fiction for (insert favorite deity) sake!
In The Lost Symbol you can't (at least I can't) work the puzzles as you read because of the symbolism is rather obtuse to the general public. But that's OK. Brown keeps the action moving along rather well and his hero solves the puzzles pretty quickly. Plenty of nifty misdirection and twists too. I enjoyed the action.
Without spoiling the ending, I'll say that, after thinking about the solution to the whole premise, Mr. Brown has made nice to the church folks he pissed off with The Da Vinci Code. Kind of a sell-out if you ask me.
'Nuff said.
Back to reading Sci-Fi and what is now termed Urban Fantasy.
